For all things mind, body, soul, and spirituality

Hello There!

It’s easy to get pulled into the negativity of the news, leaving us feeling angry, hopeless, and overwhelmed. This can negatively impact how we show up for ourselves and others.

It’s important to gauge where you invest your attention and energy towards, and how it affects your levels of stress, mental, physical and spiritual health.

Our minds and bodies can’t tell the difference between real and imagined threats, triggering a protective response in an instant.

Let me share a quick story: while hiking a new trail, I saw warning signs for mountain lions and rattlesnakes. Just the sight of the rattlesnake image made my heart race, even though the likelihood of encountering one was low. I found myself gripping my son’s hand tightly, my breath shallow, and my muscles tense. 😟

I realized I was missing out on the beautiful scenery.

I thought to myself: I’m not even enjoying the scenery because I am bracing myself for something that hasn’t happened, all because of an image and words I read.

This can happen to you too. It can take you out of the present moment. I am not saying you shouldn’t feel upset or disgusted at what you hear, watch, or read.

What I am saying is for you to consider if this is adding to the stress you may already be experiencing? Is it worth being in this state? Track how it impacts all of you and those around you.

Tip: Be mindful of what you consume digitally. The moment you are feeling the tightness, shallow breathing, irritability, it’s your sign you are in a stress response.

Practice: Pausing what you are visually consuming. Take a deep belly breath, and exhale more than the inhale (do it 3x). Slowly shake out your arms and hands, and stomp your feet.

Find what can support you to be in the here-and-now, so that you can teach your mind and body it’s actually safe.

From the state of safety, you can feel upset but not overwhelmed by it. You can take action to the cause you are passionate about, or simply disengage and take care of yourself. You can then show up more present and less reactive to yourself and those around you.

We need more regulated people in the world, and it starts with you!

As for my hike I was sharing earlier, I was able to use my somatic practices to slowly regulate and for my body to allow me to enjoy nature’s beauty.

I got to enjoy our snacks, take some pictures, and really have nature be my co-regulator.

Remember, your attention and energy are currency. Use it wisely.

Take care, and chat soon!

We are all in this together, and each time, we get better at being human.

P.S. I didn’t see a rattlesnake or mountain lion, but I did come across a tarantula. 🫠
